Mary
Mary sat there on the edge of the bed. She was glad Vincent had left. Donât get her wrong â he had a certain calming presence about him. Though that was the wrong word. Activating was a better one. She didnât need that right now. She wanted answers.
She clamped her hands on her knees. Frederick sat beside her. Bates was off by the door. Though his stance came off as casual, the look in his eyes made it clear he was protecting her.
âSo let me get this right. Thereâs a restriction in my body?â She flattened a hand down her chest. She kept doing that. She didnât know why. What? Did she think that if she rubbed under the surface a little, this restriction would pop out? It wouldnât. Sheâd heard of restrictions before. Her magical education was far more thorough than an ordinary personâs. Because ordinary people hadnât had such intense aunts. She still frowned at the news. âIâve never heard of a human with a restriction. What exactly is restricted in my body?â Sheâd already asked this question.
Bates patiently answered with a smile on his lips. âWeâre not sure. It shouldnât be dangerous, though. Youâll be fine. The boss will look after you,â he promised with another quick grin.
Mary might be oblivious most of the time. Most of the time she was too busy to stop and put up with other peopleâs troubles. But judging by that look in his eyes, she needed to pay attention. This wasnât someone elseâs trouble; it was entirely hers.
She angled toward the edge of the bed again. This quick, flighty pressure built in her chest. It made it feel as if sheâd swallowed darting birds. âWhy do you keep saying that as if Iâll have something more to do with Vincent? Once this contract is done, we will go our separate ways.â
âThatâs gonna be up to you, Mary.â
âHa? When I woke, the doctor mentioned something about marriage, didnât she? About a tournament, too,â Mary said, her voice far more interested in the last bit. That wasnât the first time someone had mentioned the word tournament. Amy had when Mary had overheard a conversation in her car.
All the while, that fact had been ticking along in the back of Maryâs head.
Whenever Mary learned intriguing facts, she could never let go of them. Some part of her mind would absorb them and start working on them, even if the rest of her wasnât conscious of that process.
Bates had been soft, almost malleable before, but now he hardened like setting steel. âI really shouldnât be the one to explain that bit to you.â
The door opened. Then Vincent walked back in. He had a distracted look.
She could tell why. Heâd just been on the phone to the council. Sheâd been keeping half an ear on him. Heâd faithfully told them about what had happened, but heâd left one thing out.
âWhy didnât you tell the council about my restriction? Celeste said it was important information for a councilmember.
